Background

Steve moved to the Triad in 2000 and practiced commercial Architecture with two of the Triad’s most prominent architecture firms contributing to high profile projects in Downtown Greensboro and Winston-Salem (chances are, you have been to or seen his work). In his spare time he was pursuing a passion for residential architecture.

Steve started a residential design studio as a sole-proprietor in 2000 subcontracting for local residential builders designing everything from small home additions to speculative and custom single family homes.  In 2002 Steve founded Brown Dog Designs (inspired by his family's Chocolate Lab) and teamed up with Tom Garcia, Garcia Homes, to customize Southern Living Program Homes and design high end homes for clients throughout the country.  Together with Tom Garcia, Steve helped create Southern Evergreen. Steve is the Principal Architect for Southern Evergreen Architecture PLLC managing commercial and residential architectural design, project programming, construction management, interior design, historic preservation, and cabinetry/furniture design.

Steve, together with his wife and two kids, lives in the suburbs of Greensboro.

Steve's passion for residential design is profoundly influenced by the innate "human" scale of the work and the interaction and relationship that must exist between the home owner, architect, and builder. Every home owner lives in their home differently. It is Steve’s responsibility to understand how the client lives in, around, and through their home and assure their new home perfectly accommodates them.

Steve’s responsibility is to manage all phases of the design process and facilitate the construction process as needed. Steve’s attention to functional and aesthetic details, his design and drafting skills, and his ability to see and craft space in three-dimensions allow the client to understand and appreciate the design and building process. Steve uses modern computer aided drafting and 3-d modeling technology as well as hand rendering, scale models, and water rendering in his work.
