Cornwallis Avenue Studio & Kitchen Renovation

To realize the dream of teaching baking and sewing classes, the homeowner re-purposed several spaces in her home. The focus was the existing one car garage – it became an airy, open vaulted space with a full kitchen and sewing studio. This new space includes room for demonstration, exhibition of projects and a hands-on work area for her students, as well as a half bath with custom fixtures. The beautiful new side entrance into the teaching space emphasizes the dual purpose of the home. The existing family-style kitchen was given a new work pattern and more floor space by moving the range to a side wall. The oven and microwave were carved into the wall next to the refrigerator, in a space that used to be a bathroom.

The renovated master bath now offers a large grout-free shower with a seating ledge, a private toilet and readily accessible toiletry storage. The closet was also enlarged and reconfigured for better organization.

The existing carport became a two car garage. All of the items from the original garage are now housed in the “little house in the woods,” which sits beautifully in the backyard’s mature landscaping.
